Our History and Vision

We love what we do

African Retreats was born out of a deep passion for yoga and a love for South Africa’s breathtaking nature.

Jana and Manfred founded African Retreats to offer health group journeys and individually tailored wellness trips in Africa that rejuvenate both body and mind.

From Idea to Reality

What started as a personal journey quickly evolved into a company with a clear mission: to inspire, transform, and provide unforgettable experiences. We combined our expertise in yoga and meditation with our enthusiasm for South African culture and nature, creating a unique retreat concept. Together with our partners from various health professions, we strive every day to offer you an extraordinary experience in Africa.

Our Philosophy

At African Retreats, we believe in the transformative power of travel and yoga. Our philosophy is based on the conviction that true change and self-discovery often happen outside our comfort zone. By immersing our guests in the breathtaking nature of South Africa while introducing them to the practice of yoga, we create the perfect setting for personal growth and profound experiences.

A Holistic Approach

Our approach goes far beyond traditional yoga retreats. We integrate elements of South African culture, nature experiences, and wellness practices to create a truly holistic experience. Our goal is for you to return from your journey not only relaxed but also deeply inspired.

Jana Böhm

Yoga teacher, certified fasting guide, and nutrition consultant

Jana Böhm grew up in Pilsen, Czech Republic. Trained as a hotel management professional, she took the leap into self-employment early on, managing several restaurants in Munich.Twenty years ago, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, which she initially ignored. A decade later, in her early forties, her health had deteriorated significantly. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia and suffering from multiple herniated discs, she experienced burnout. Instead of accepting conventional medical recommendations, Jana took control of her health. She turned to Feldenkrais, Qi Gong, and Yoga, seeking alternative treatments.

These transformative experiences led her to train as a yoga teacher and Ayurveda nutrition consultant. Today, she shares her knowledge and passion through her courses and retreats, inspiring others to lead a healthy and balanced life.

“The beauty is that so much strength lies within our body and mind. Every day offers us the opportunity for change, step by step.”

Manfred Engelmann

Manfred discovered his passion for Africa during a trip in 1996, and he immediately fell in love with the continent. Six years later, he took a bold step toward a new life in Cape Town.

For over two decades, he has organized exclusive tours across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana, offering unique insights into the region’s landscapes and cultures. His deep knowledge and love for the area make every journey an unforgettable experience.

Through his life partner, Jana, Manfred discovered the transformative power of yoga, Qigong, and healthy nutrition, which have given him renewed energy for his many activities. He is also a dedicated supporter of Project Help in South Africa.

“I love my work. There is nothing more beautiful for me than seeing the magic this wonderful land has on each and every person. Once you’ve been to Africa, you carry it in your heart forever.”
